Sue Ring-Jarvi is a Minnesota-born hockey enthusiast whose passion for the game has spanned half a century. Her hockey journey began at 22, playing pond hockey with her 47-year-old mother—a tradition that sparked a lifelong love for the sport. Fifty years later, Sue is still lacing up her skates to play on two teams while continuing to organize hockey leagues and tournament teams.
Sue’s dedication to growing women’s hockey is legendary. She founded the University of Minnesota Women’s Hockey Club in 1974 and the Minnesota Blue J’s in 1980, leading the team to multiple state and national championships. As one of four managers to start the Minnesota Women’s Hockey League in 1978, she helped build what would become WHAM (Women’s Hockey Association of Minnesota). Her efforts didn’t stop there—she organized 13 youth girls’ teams in the metro area and ran women’s hockey clinics for 20 years, starting in 1979.
Sue has been married to Roland Ring-Jarvi for 43 years, and together they’ve fostered a family legacy of hockey. Their son, Ross, played hockey at Gustavus College before taking his talents to Norway, Sweden, and Alaska, where he met his wife, Jen Baker. Now, Sue’s grandson, Remi, is carrying the family torch—at just 11 months old, he’s almost ready to try on his first pair of skates.
With a life devoted to the ice, Sue’s story is a testament to her love of hockey, her sense of humor, and her commitment to building a community where everyone has a chance to play.
